Why Does Window Film Bubble?

why does window film bubble

One of the questions we get asked here a lot at Window Film Kansas City is, “Why does window film bubble?” It can be alarming to see bubbles in your window tint since these can affect visibility and create an unsightly aesthetic. However, bubbling tint may not be as unusual as you think. Below, we’ve discussed some of the reasons why this phenomenon occurs.

What Causes Window Film to Bubble?

Bubbles in your window film can look distracting and cause you to feel concerned. You may be wondering, will the bubbles go away? Or, should I call in an expert? It’s possible that the bubbles could go away on their own, but it depends on what’s causing them. Alternatively, the bubbling could get worse. Here’s why you may be seeing bubbles on the window film of your Kansas City home or building:

Reason #1: It was recently installed.

Window film goes through a process of curing after installing. During this time, it’s normal to see bubbles beneath the film. These are most likely caused by moisture, which will eventually evaporate and go away in a few weeks.

Reason #2: Dirt is trapped between the glass and the window film.

If the window was not cleaned properly or was disturbed too soon after installation, dirt may be caught beneath the surface. Sometimes, air pockets will form around the dirt and cause the film to bubble.

Reason #3: The adhesive has worn out.

Adhesives degrade with time. If your window film is over 5 years old, it’s possible that the adhesive has worn out and the film is no longer sticking to the glass like it should. A quality adhesive should last 7-10 years, but environmental conditions like excess heat or cold can play a role.

Reason #4: It’s cheap and poorly made.

You bought a cheap window film. Cheap window films last 2-3 years at the most.

Reason #5: Your window film is old.

Nothing lasts forever. If your window film was installed some time ago and is just now starting to blister, it may be time to have it replaced. In this case, we can remove the old product and install a new one in its place.
